He opened his home. She stole his heart…and his money.
Many would envy veterinarian Russ Gray’s life in rural Montana’s wide-open spaces. Russ calls it lonely. In a country with more cattle than eligible females, he doesn’t envision his seven years as a widower ending anytime soon. Until a mysterious woman lands at his door in the dead of night, riddled with buckshot.
Sarah Novak hates lying to such a kind, handsome man, but if an upstanding citizen like Russ finds out why she’s been three weeks on the run, he’d surely turn her in. Yet she can’t refuse his offer to let her stay until she heals, no questions asked.
From the start they fall into an easy companionship, then teasing flirtation flares into an unexpected intimate connection. But no matter how right it feels in his arms, guilt tugs at Sarah’s heart. Russ doesn’t deserve what she must do next.
When Russ wakes up with an empty bed—and an empty wallet—his first instinct isn’t to call the cops…it’s to catch her and find out why his urge to protect her overshadows all reason. Because he’s had a taste of real passion, and he’s not letting it slip away without a fight.

Russ Grey is a lonely man. His wife died seven years ago and, while no longer in the acute grieving stage, he's been existing in a kind of emotional void. While his work as a veterinarian keeps him busy, his personal life is barren. He lives in a remote area of Montana with no close neighbors. He doesn't have internet access, doesn't have family nearby and his social life consists of the occasional beer at a small bar in the nearest town. When a young woman, bleeding and in need of medical attention, appears in his driveway in the middle of the night he's willing to accept her implausible explanation because he's grateful for the (female) company. He pushes aside his doubts and helps her, hoping that she'll stay for awhile. Russ is in for a surprise.Sarah Novak is on the run and she is desperate. Russ seems like a nice guy and she hates to take advantage of him, but she doesn't see any alternative. While she does have an ulterior motive, she's grateful for the time she spends with him. It's a respite from weeks of living on the streets, from being afraid 24/7. Under different circumstances she'd welcome a relationship with this man, but things being what they are she will betray him.
I enjoyed this story immensely. It was a welcome alternative to all the predictable contemporary romances I've been reading lately, with their Barbie & Ken characters and cookie-cutter storylines. These two people are far from perfect, their motivations are ambiguous and their logic sometimes sketchy. They were interesting, they had depth and their imperfections made them relatable. The dialogue was quite good, awkward in places where you would expect it to be awkward. Real people don't speak in pithy sound bites. I thought the sex scenes were very well written. Instead of the usual polished and highly choreographed gymnastics, these love scenes had a realistic feel to them. There's some clumsiness, a little shyness and yet they are definitely hot.
There are some plot holes and few things that didn't quite add up for me, but overall this was a great story and one I would highly recommend if you want something a little edgier.
Some strong language and explicit sexual content.

well written and not all romance, makes it more realistic, I really enjoyed it
It's a pity this story was too short (in my opinion). I would love to see these characters evolve into a long-lasting relationship!
This was a great book with a good story line. Plenty of romance and sex scenes. Would recommend other books from the author
This was the first book I read by Meg Maguire. I thought Russ was dumb & brave for letting Sarah stay in his home. I loved the steamy scenes. It kept me interested from the beginning to the end. I really enjoyed reading this book very much. I am very happy with my purchase.
Sarah is running, thinking she may have killed a man. With a side full of buckshot she finds Russ. Russ a country vet, is a good
Man and the book is really about how they fall in love. Definitely has it's slow moments.
Meg Maguire/Cara McKenna writes real characters who stay with you long after the story ends. She writes wonderful dialogue and the emotions and actions of her characters never seem forced or unrealistic. She writes steamy sex scenes that are never gratuitous and leave me abuzz (I had read all of her erotica first and only then followed with the romances). I am well on my way to reading everything she's published. She is definitely in the very top tier of great erotic/romance writers.
Meg Maguire (aka Cara McKenna) is one of the most interesting writers in contemporary fiction. She creates interesting, three dimensional characters with none of the clichés normally found in romance novels. Although I`ve enjoyed many of her stories, TRESPASS is definitely a favorite.
Russ is a vet in rural Montana. Although only 36 years old, he has been caught in a time warp following the death of his wife seven years ago. He is unable to shake the label of widower and move on with his life. Sarah (known as Nicole at the start of the book) is the daughter of a drug-addicted mother and comes with a whole set of her own labels. Being a murderer is the latest one.
Maguire does a fantastic job of creating an edgy mood. Think of "Jaws" music in the back of your head for the first few chapters as you wait for Sarah to screw up once again. I felt like I was watching a slow moving train wreck and wanted to yell, "Noooooo...." The author is great at creating little moments of humor to lighten the tension which is present throughout the story.
"He gave her a slap on the shoulder and watched her eyebrows rise. It was what he always did to a steer or a horse after he was done tending to it."
"You ever worry the ghosts of a thousand jilted, nutless horses will come back to haunt you?" She pointed her eyes at his belt. Russ made a nervous face. "Not sure I like the way you think, Nicole."
"You`re a ball-buster, aren`t you?" She shrugged. "At least I don`t chop them off." He went back to work. "Well, I`m rusty at impressing women with my charm and sensitivity, so keep your expectations low."
"She looked up and met his eyes, poured all his brain chemicals into a blender and hit pureé."
I`m not sure if I`m the only one to feel this way, but the cover of the book almost stopped me from buying it. It has a paranormal vibe which doesn`t suit the 36 year Montana vet at all.
