I think some reviews are a bit harsh with this one, in saying that I have read the 'proofread version' and I enjoyed it.
For $1.50 I don't think you can go wrong with this one, I will get a teaser for the second book and see how that goes.
I liked the main characters and the secondary characters well enough although I would prefer if Logan went and hid in a hole.
The short read has a good plot that will flow into the next book and I look forward to see how it progresses. The book itself wasn't the lovey dovey romance that some shifter romances are so if you're into that be prepared but I liked that it wasn't over the top with empty romantic generic gestures.
The editing was what a lot of people complained about but like I said earlier I have read the edited version and it wasn't bad. I only noticed one mistake that stood out and even then it wasn't too bad. I actually think with better editing this author could be an up and coming.

Reason I deducted a star? In one scene callie had said she got Sarah in a cab when in a bad situation, in the next it was that she to hot wired a car. I know a lot of people wouldn't notice this but I did.

Do I recommend? Sure for that price it was a decent read. I feel sorry for the author for not having the book edited before releasing otherwise this would be solid 4star book. It'll be hard to come back from that.

First Beginnings Penn Lake Wolves Book 1 edition by Clare Atling Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I literally couldn't read this book due to the bad grammar and terrible English. I'm a proofreader by trade, so that could have made things worse, but I made it through the first chapter and then returned it. I had to reread things because the punctuation and grammar were so bad that it didn't even make sense. The author needs to send this to a proofreader/editor before putting it out there for people to read. For all I know, the story could have been a good one, but I couldn't even get past the first chapter to find out.
As others have said, good story and I am anticipating the next installment of Penn Lake Wolves. However, I would agree that the spelling and grammatical errors were hard to get past. Spellchecker will not catch of "ill" which should have been "I'll" which made it hard to read until I got use to it and then my brain automatically made the substitution. Not to include any spoilers, but I am looking forward to the next couple getting together. Should be a fun read (providing the spelling and grammatical errors are kept to a minimum).
Clare, this was a good first beginnings for a new author. Looking forward to what you come up with next. And if you need another proofreader, I'd love to apply.
Unbelievably great book! It held me in its spell the entire time I was reading it. I can't wait to read more about the story of everyone in it. I hated to come to the end of the book. If the rest of this series lives up to this books level of compelling enjoyment over becoming lost in the story, well, it will be a much appreciated bit of escape from real life. I can honestly recommend this book to anyone who loves shift romance as well as anyone who just loves good books in general. Grab this book, sit back, kick your feet up and dive in, but be ready to be held spellbound until you get to the end as you won't want to put it down until you reach the last page.
I liked the story, what I couldn't get into was the many spelling and grammatical errors and the horrible english. I would seriously fire whoever was suppose to edit this book and get someone else to fix it. The story is good, I was painfully able to keep going to the end and I am still up in the air as to whether it was worth it or not. Hopefully, this author will read the reviews and realize the book is in dire need of being edited by a professional.
I picked up First Beginnings during one of my Shifter Novel Crawls. If you are new to Ali-speak, an Crawl is just like a bar crawl, but more ridiculous. It’s when I get bored, impulsive or stupid irresponsible and begin searching for random things in (in this case read shifter mates erotica) and then go through 33, 66, or 99 pages buying whatever appeals to me or putting it in a wishlist for later. It’s expensive. It’s a terrible shopping addiction. And it happens A LOT!

I bought this and was incredibly annoyed that the cover was a square. It irritated me and I didn’t read the book for a few weeks to punish it for having in irregular shaped cover. When I got around to starting the book I have to admit that I was at first confuzzled over what the weird niggling I was having in the back of my head was and then I realized it was the general feeling of this being a pretty good but rather generic shifter story. There wasn’t any reason for me to throw up my dress and HEE-HAW and nothing demanding I throw down the book and dance on it’s smoldering ashes… it was the baby bear version of a shifter story of just right.

Sarah and her bestie, Callie are like twinsies, but not. Besties above the resties, these girls have been living together while fighting the years the rest of us call College Life while dreaming of a time when they will build a kingdom of cakes in a bakery made of sweetness and icing, hard work, blood, sweat and tears. All that is shot to sugar when a ‘Hurray! We have degrees that will amount to nothing!’ celebration catches the eye of one Big Bad and sends these chickies to flight and Callie’s secret is out when her fur flies and Sarah comes face to face with the fact that her best friend is actually man’s best friend but a much finer quality breed.

Enter Seth and Brandon, Penn Lake Pack Wolves and the good guys. It’s pretty formulaic as far as the romance between Sarah and Seth goes, but really the back story is the gravy for this first novella in the series because it sets up the arc for the rest of the books. You get to revisit the Big Bad Wolf from the beginning and see why the girls are important and Clare Atling’s shifter-world at large which isn’t all sexy brothers and saucy mom and pops.

My eek and cry moments came when no one helped Clare edit her books and things popped up like this
Listen, I’m not going to stop you if you want to leave the hotel, but if your friend’s right about this wolf following you home, then I can’t just let you go.
Well it’s either one thing or the other… you are stopping her or you aren’t. (This review was written for my blog All The Things Inbetween at AlltheThingsInbetween-dot-net)
